Episode One: Setting SMART Goals

1. Understanding Instagram's Role in Your Business:

I often ask my clients, "What role does Instagram play in your business?" The answer to this question helps determine their realistic goals for their business. Are you looking to grow your email list, sell directly, or drive traffic to your website? More often than not, clients express a desire to grow on Instagram.

Now, here's something crucial to understand: Businesses typically fall into one of two camps on Instagram:

Influencers: These accounts aim to amass tens of thousands of followers and engage in affiliate marketing and brand deals.

Convert Referrals: This camp focuses on creating brand awareness and generating leads. It's about ensuring that when a current client mentions your business, others can easily find your Instagram, engage with your content, and visit your website to become customers. It's about quality followers, building relationships, looking professional—no need to grow overnight.

While some businesses may be in both camps, I often emphasize the importance of converting referrals. Most of the clients I work with, such as designers, nutritionists, lawyers, and realtors, can only take on a limited number of clients at a time. Massive growth isn't always the best goal for them.

So, do you want to grow to the thousands, or do you want to convert referrals? Knowing your camp is key.

2. Setting SMART Goals for Instagram:

Once you've identified your camp, it's time to set SMART goals. Here's how I do it in my business:

General Goals: These include building know-like-trust, consistency, building a personal brand, genuine engagement, promoting free and paid offers, and showcasing a portfolio with reviews and testimonials.

SMART Goals: These are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Examples include getting 10% more traffic to sales pages from Instagram in 30 days, gaining 20 more followers this month who are local business owners, or securing 20 more email subscribers this month through Instagram. Your SMART goals should align with your business's season, quarterly objectives, and sales targets.

My advice: Write down your goals! And guess what? I have the perfect place for you to jot them down! My PDF Workbook that walks you through this six-part series. Download it HERE
